Google AI Mode Updates, Sept. 2026: Gemini 3.8, Agents, Ads and Checkout

Summary graphic of Google AI Mode updates in September 2026, including Gemini 3.8, monitoring agents and ad tests

Short answer

The main Google AI Mode updates in September 2026 were Gemini 3.8 Flash for paying subscribers, monitoring agents rolled out to all users, two new ad formats spotted inside AI Mode, tests sending AI Overview clicks into AI Mode, auto-enabled native checkout for eligible merchants, and a new Multimodal search type in Search Console.

September brought a long list of Google AI Mode updates: a new Gemini model, alerts that watch the web for users, two new ad formats, tests that steer people from AI Overviews into AI Mode, and automatic checkout for some online sellers. Here is what each change is, how solid the reporting is, and what it means for a local service business.

Not everything on this list is an official announcement. Some items were rolled out and described by Google executives. Others are tests that SEOs spotted and trade press reported, with no statement from Google. The table separates the two so you can decide how much weight to give each one.

Which Gemini model runs AI Mode now?

Google is swapping models quickly. Search Engine Journal reported that Gemini 3.7 Flash came to AI Mode on August 14, one day after the model launched, for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers globally in English. Then on September 2, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Robby Stein, VP of Product for Search, said Gemini 3.8 Flash “has landed in Search,” again for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers globally.

“Less than three weeks after 3.7.”

Nick Fox, Google

One detail matters more than the version numbers. Neither Search Engine Land’s coverage nor the other reports say which model powers free AI Mode or AI Overviews. Most of your customers are not paying subscribers, so you cannot assume the newest model is the one answering their questions.

The practical lesson: do not chase a model. A tactic tuned to one version can stop working three weeks later. What holds up across versions is a site that states plain, checkable facts about your services, service area, hours and pricing approach, in words a customer would use. That is the core of our answer engine optimization work.

What are AI Mode monitoring agents?

On September 28, Google rolled out monitoring to all AI Mode users worldwide. According to Search Engine Roundtable, users tell AI Mode what to watch for, and Google sends an alert in the Google app when the condition is met. The feature had been limited to Ultra and Pro subscribers.

To decide when to alert someone, Google checks the web, forums, social posts, real-time sources and a Shopping Graph of more than 60 billion products. Google’s own examples are new nearby restaurants and price drops.

Plumbers and roofers are not in Google’s examples, and we would not promise that anyone is setting alerts for them yet. But look at the sources the agent reads: the web, forums and social posts. Those are the same places that shape how AI describes your business. Accurate, current information in each of them is the safest bet, starting with your Business Profile. We explained why in our post on Business Profile citations in AI Mode.

Are ads showing up inside AI Mode answers?

Reports say yes, and in more forms. On September 4, Search Engine Roundtable reported search ads with restrictive match types serving in AI Mode. On September 15, Sachin Patel spotted “Sponsored” text-link ads that look like the answer text itself. Google has not commented on either.

If you run Google Ads, this has two consequences. First, do not assume tight match types keep your ads out of AI answers. Second, a sponsored link that reads like part of the answer is a different kind of placement from a classic ad at the top of the page. Watch your lead quality and cost per booked job, not just clicks, so you can tell whether these placements are pulling their weight.

AI ads are not only a Google story. We looked at whether a local service business should test the other big option in our ChatGPT ads guide.

Is Google pushing more searchers into AI Mode?

The tests point that way. On September 18, Google was seen testing an AI Mode button on the search results page. On September 22, Search Engine Roundtable reported that links at the bottom of some AI Overviews, which look like ordinary links, opened AI Mode instead of a web page. That was first seen on desktop. Google has made no statement on either test.

Discover is getting similar treatment. On September 18, Google started testing “Dive deeper” in Discover, where a tap opens an AI topic overview rather than the publisher’s article. Search Engine Land’s coverage framed the test as bad news for publishers.

“Today we’re experimenting with a new way to make exploring a topic… easier in Discover.”

Robby Stein, Google

For a home service business, the takeaway is not panic. It is to plan for more customers meeting you inside an AI answer before they ever reach your website. That raises the value of being named and described correctly in the answer, and of a site that converts the visitors who do click.

AI checkout and image searches: two changes to check

Native checkout is switched on automatically

On September 22, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google emailed merchants whose platforms support the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) about native checkout in AI Mode and Gemini. UCP checkout launched for a limited set of merchants in February and expanded around September 18.

Watch out

Google’s email said: “Eligible products are automatically included.” If you sell parts, equipment or accessories online, you may already be opted in. Shopify merchants can opt out under Sales channels > Agentic. Check that setting, and make sure prices, stock and shipping details in your product data are correct before a customer buys through Google.

Search Console now shows photo searches

On September 24, Search Engine Roundtable reported a new “Multimodal” search type in the Search Console performance report. It covers searches made with an image: Google Lens, Circle to Search, image uploads and Chrome’s “Search this image.” The queries dimension is not available for this search type, so you will see pages and totals but not what people typed.

It is worth a look. A homeowner photographing a broken part or a damaged fixture is a realistic way to search, and this report shows whether any of your pages are reached that way. If your Search Console is not set up cleanly, our analytics and tracking team can help.

What to do this week

  • Open Search Console and check the new Multimodal search type for any pages getting image-based searches.
  • If you sell products online, check whether native checkout is on and confirm your prices and stock are accurate.
  • Review your Google Ads lead quality and cost per booked job, since ads have been reported serving inside AI Mode.
  • Update your Business Profile hours, services and photos so AI answers describe you correctly.
  • Rewrite one key service page so it states your service area, response times and pricing approach in plain words.

Frequently asked questions

Do free users get Gemini 3.8 in AI Mode?

The reports do not say. Trade press coverage says Gemini 3.7 Flash and Gemini 3.8 Flash came to AI Mode for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers globally, and none of the sources say which model powers free AI Mode or AI Overviews. Because most customers use the free version, it is safer to write for clear facts than to tune content for one model.

How do AI Mode monitoring alerts work?

A user tells AI Mode what to watch for, and Google sends an alert in the Google app when the condition is met. According to Search Engine Roundtable, Google checks the web, forums, social posts, real-time sources and a Shopping Graph of more than 60 billion products. The feature rolled out to all users globally on September 28, 2026, after being limited to paid subscribers.

Can my Google Ads appear inside AI Mode?

Trade press reported search ads with restrictive match types serving in AI Mode on September 4, 2026, and Sponsored text-link ads that look like answer text on September 15. Google has not commented on either. If you run Google Ads, judge these placements by lead quality and cost per booked job rather than assuming tight match types keep you out.

Will AI Overview links send people to my website?

Not always. On September 22, 2026, Search Engine Roundtable reported that some links at the bottom of AI Overviews, which look like ordinary links, opened AI Mode instead of a web page. It was first seen on desktop and Google has not commented. Treat it as a test, but plan for more customers seeing your business inside AI answers first.

Where do I find the Multimodal report in Search Console?

It is a search type in the Search Console performance report, alongside the existing types. It covers searches made with an image, including Google Lens, Circle to Search, image uploads and Chrome’s Search this image. The queries dimension is not available for it, so you will see which pages were reached and totals, but not what people searched for.
