Short answer
ChatGPT ads are now sold in roughly 41 markets by PPC Land’s count, with CPM or CPC bidding, conversion optimization and the OpenAI Pixel. Most local service businesses should wait or run a small, tightly tracked test. AI platforms sent only about 0.32% of website traffic in SE Ranking’s study, so your Google presence and lead tracking should come first.
ChatGPT ads went from a small US pilot in February to roughly 41 ad markets by late August, by PPC Land’s count, and OpenAI says “tens of thousands of marketers” have already advertised. If you run a plumbing, HVAC, roofing or cleaning company, the real question is whether ChatGPT ads deserve any of your budget yet.
Short version: they are worth understanding now and worth testing only if your basics are already in place. Here is what has actually been announced, what is still just a rumor, and how to run a test without wasting money.
What happened with ChatGPT ads in 2026?
OpenAI started small. According to trade coverage from PPC Land and Search Engine Roundtable, a US pilot began on February 9, 2026 at a $60 CPM (cost per thousand impressions). A self-serve Ads Manager beta with cost-per-click bidding followed on May 5, with a suggested maximum CPC of $3 to $5.
Then it sped up. On August 18, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT ads were expanding to 31 European markets. Ads started showing around August 24, and self-serve buying was open in all 31 markets by August 31. India went live on August 29, announced by OpenAI’s Benji Shomair on LinkedIn, and PPC Land now counts about 41 ad markets in total.
| Date | Milestone | How solid is it? |
|---|---|---|
| Feb 9, 2026 | US pilot at a $60 CPM | Trade press |
| May 5, 2026 | Self-serve Ads Manager beta, CPC bidding | Trade press |
| Aug 18–31, 2026 | 31 European markets, self-serve in all 31 | Confirmed by OpenAI |
| Aug 29, 2026 | India goes live, about 41 markets total | Trade press |
| Sept 4, 2026 | Tooling updates and a product-feed claim | Vendor blog only, not confirmed |
One detail matters for anyone thinking about reach: ads show only to people on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Enterprise users stay ad-free. The audience is large, but it is not everyone who uses ChatGPT.
How do ChatGPT ads work for a small business?
According to OpenAI’s European announcement, advertisers can buy on CPM or CPC bidding, use conversion optimization, and track results with the OpenAI Pixel and a Conversions API. That is a familiar toolkit if you have run Google or Meta ads. It also means you can, in principle, measure leads rather than just clicks.
What the announcements do not spell out is how well the system handles a small, local campaign. Before you spend anything, check these points inside Ads Manager yourself:
- Whether you can limit ads to your real service area, not a whole country or state.
- Whether a phone call or form fill can count as a conversion through the Pixel or Conversions API.
- What minimum budget or bid the platform suggests for your category.
- How the ad is labeled and where it appears, so you know what a customer will actually see.
If any of those answers is unclear, that is a reason to wait or to keep the test very small.
Are product feeds now required for ChatGPT ads?
You may have seen headlines saying product feeds are now mandatory. That claim traces to a September 4 post on the Common Thread Co. blog, a vendor that works with ecommerce brands. The post reports an Ads Manager plugin, custom-audience changes, new Pixel and Conversions API fields and budget pacing. It also claims: “Shopping results inside ChatGPT are now exclusive to brands with connected product feeds.”
OpenAI has not confirmed any of it. Treat it as a vendor report until OpenAI’s own announcements or help pages say the same thing. For context, TechInformed reported in late March that OpenAI had refocused ChatGPT shopping on discovery and de-emphasized Instant Checkout, so the shopping side of ChatGPT has been changing quickly.
For a service business, the feed question matters less anyway. You don’t sell SKUs. Your product is a booked job, so the questions that matter are targeting and lead tracking, not catalog feeds.
Watch out
If an agency or software vendor tells you ChatGPT ads now require a product feed or a particular plugin, ask to see OpenAI’s own documentation. As of this week, the only source we have seen for the product-feed claim is a vendor blog.
How much traffic does ChatGPT actually send to websites?
Ads buy attention on a platform, so it helps to know how big that platform is as a traffic source today. SE Ranking’s study of 101,574 sites, covering January 2025 to April 2026, found that AI referrals made up about 0.32% of website traffic.
Two things are true at once. ChatGPT is by far the largest AI referrer, sending roughly three of every four AI visits in SE Ranking’s data, and AI referrals grew about 16 times from 2024 to 2026. But organic search still drove 42.75% of all traffic in the same study, about 134 times all AI platforms combined.
For a local business, that suggests an order of operations. Your Google presence still carries most of the weight. Earning free mentions inside AI answers, which is what answer engine optimization is about, usually comes before paying for AI ad placements.
ChatGPT ads vs. Google: where should a local business spend first?
Google is putting ads into its own AI answers, too. In SE Ranking’s study of 50,032 commercial keywords in Google’s AI Mode (US data from June 30, 2026), ads appeared on 29.45% of them. The pricier the keyword, the more likely an ad showed: 24.33% of keywords under $2 CPC, 32.45% between $2 and $10, and 53.56% at $10 and above.
Results also varied widely by niche, from 72% in Pets to 2.6% in Healthcare. Those are the extremes the study reported. Your own trade could sit anywhere in between, so look at your own keywords instead of assuming.
Meanwhile, Google is moving Local Services Ads into Google Ads as pay-per-lead campaigns, starting in August. ChatGPT ads have only been self-serve since May, so there is far less track record to learn from. For most home service companies, ChatGPT ads are the experiment, not the foundation. Should a local service business test ChatGPT ads yet?
Our take: most local service businesses should wait, or run a small and tightly tracked test. Here is how to decide.
Consider a test if
- You already have reliable call and form tracking in GA4 or your CRM.
- Your Google campaigns and Business Profile are in good shape and you have money set aside for experiments.
- ChatGPT ads are available in your market and you can target your service area sensibly.
- You will judge the test on booked jobs, not clicks.
Wait if
- Your website, reviews or Business Profile still need basic work.
- You can’t tell today which channel your phone calls come from.
- Your monthly budget is already stretched by Google.
How to run a small test
- Set a hard cap. Pick a total you are comfortable treating as the cost of learning, and do not raise it mid-test.
- Install tracking first. Set up the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API alongside call tracking, so a lead from ChatGPT is counted as a lead. Our analytics and tracking team can help if this part is shaky.
- Start with CPC. Paying per click limits waste while you learn. Trade reports put the suggested maximum CPC at $3 to $5.
- Compare cost per booked job. Put the ChatGPT numbers next to your Google Ads and Local Services Ads numbers for the same period.
- Decide on a fixed date. Set the review date before you start, then scale, adjust or stop based on booked jobs.
What to do this week
- Open GA4 and check whether ChatGPT already sends you referral visits, and which pages they land on.
- Ask your next five new customers how they found you, and whether they used ChatGPT or another AI tool.
- Log in to ChatGPT Ads Manager and confirm what location targeting and conversion options you actually have.
- Make sure your Google Business Profile hours, services and phone number are current before testing any new channel.
- Ignore any “product feeds required” pitch until OpenAI confirms it.
ChatGPT ads are moving fast, and it is smart to learn the platform while costs and competition are still forming. Just keep the order straight: tracking and organic visibility first, paid experiments second. If you want a second opinion on whether a test makes sense for your business, get in touch.
Frequently asked questions
Who sees ChatGPT ads?
According to OpenAI, ads show only to people using ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. Users on Plus, Pro and Enterprise plans do not see ads. That means your potential audience is large but not every ChatGPT user, so keep that in mind when you estimate reach or compare results with other channels.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
Trade press reported that the US pilot began at a $60 CPM in February 2026, and that the self-serve Ads Manager beta added CPC bidding in May with a suggested maximum CPC of $3 to $5. Your real cost will depend on your bids, targeting and category, so start with a capped test budget.
Do I need a product feed to run ChatGPT ads?
A vendor blog, Common Thread Co., claimed on September 4, 2026 that shopping results inside ChatGPT are now exclusive to brands with connected product feeds. OpenAI has not confirmed this. For a plumber, roofer or cleaning company that sells services rather than products, a catalog feed is unlikely to be the deciding factor either way. Focus on targeting and lead tracking.
Is ChatGPT sending more traffic than Google?
No. SE Ranking’s study of 101,574 sites found AI referrals were about 0.32% of website traffic, while organic search was 42.75%, roughly 134 times all AI platforms combined. ChatGPT was the largest AI referrer, at about 75% of AI referrals in 2026, and AI referrals grew about 16 times since 2024, so it is a channel to watch.
What should I track if I test ChatGPT ads?
Track booked jobs, not just clicks. Set up the OpenAI Pixel or Conversions API, add call tracking so phone leads are counted, and record which leads became paying customers. Then compare cost per booked job against Google Ads and Local Services Ads for the same period before deciding whether to keep spending.
