Short answer
The SEO trends 2027 is expected to bring for local service businesses center on AI: forecasters and commentators point to AI recommendations replacing ranked lists, longer multi-part queries, ads inside AI answers and agents acting for customers. Forrester advises more AEO investment. We recommend budgeting for accurate business data, reviews, answer-first service pages and better lead tracking, not a total rebuild.
Every agency has a list of SEO trends 2027 will supposedly bring. This one sticks to what named forecasters actually said, keeps their predictions separate from our recommendations, and turns both into a budget a plumber, roofer or cleaning company can use.
What do the forecasts actually say about 2027?
Start with a caveat: nobody has 2027 data yet. What exists are forecasts and surveys published during 2026. These are the ones worth knowing, and who said them.
- Gartner. In its Top Strategic Predictions for 2027 and Beyond, Gartner’s headline prediction is that by the end of 2030, more than 10 billion autonomous agents from people, companies and governments will “overload public services.” None of its 10 predictions is specifically about search or marketing.
- Gartner, on marketing. In January, Gartner predicted that by 2027 brands will put 50% of influencer budgets toward authenticity and verification, aiming to perform better in “AI search environments.” It also predicted that by 2028, 60% of brands will use agentic AI for one-to-one interactions.
- Forrester. According to Marketing-Interactive’s coverage of Forrester’s 2027 budget planning guides, 91% of B2C and 89% of B2B marketing decision-makers expect investment to rise. Forrester advises increasing AEO investment and tells B2C brands to lean on PR, influencers and customer reviews, because AI answers draw on third-party sources.
- EMARKETER. Its forecast puts US AI search ad spend at $2.08 billion in 2026, about 1.3% of US search ad spend, rising to $25.93 billion, about 13.6%, by 2029.
- Search Engine Land opinion. In an opinion piece on AI and local search in 2027, Milestone’s Benu Aggarwal predicts AI recommendations replacing ranked lists, longer queries with several requirements, data consistency and structured data becoming decisive, and agents completing bookings.
7 SEO trends 2027 budgets should plan for
Each shift below pairs a sourced fact or forecast with what we recommend doing about it. The recommendations are our view, not a prediction.
1. AI answers become the front door
The scale is already here. On the Alphabet Q2 2026 earnings call, Sundar Pichai said AI Mode has more than 1 billion monthly active users and that Google is “sending billions of clicks to websites each week” through AI features in Search. At DevDay 2026, OpenAI said ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users.
Our recommendation: put a plain, direct answer at the top of every core service page, covering what you do, where you do it and how to book. That serves the skimming customer and the AI system summarizing your page. It is the heart of our answer engine optimization work.
2. Recommendations instead of ranked lists
The Search Engine Land piece predicts AI recommendations will replace ranked lists and that queries will get longer, with several requirements at once. It repeats Google-reported figures: AI Overviews have more than 2.5 billion monthly users, and AI Mode queries are 3x longer than traditional ones.
Our recommendation: write for the full question a customer asks, such as a weekend water heater repair in a specific suburb, not only for two-word keywords. Spell out service areas, hours, emergency availability and the jobs you do and don’t take.
3. Consistent business data matters more
The same piece predicts that data consistency and structured data will become decisive. That is an opinion, not a Google statement, but it is cheap to act on. We recommend checking your name, address, phone, hours and services across your website, Google Business Profile and major directories, and fixing mismatches before January. Our local SEO and Business Profile work starts there.
4. Third-party proof carries more weight
Forrester’s advice to lean on PR, influencers and reviews rests on the point that AI answers draw on third-party sources. Gartner’s influencer prediction points the same way, with its stress on authenticity and verification. For a local service business, we read that as a steady stream of genuine reviews, plus mentions from local news, trade associations and community groups.
5. Ads move inside AI answers
Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google is testing ads in AI Mode for users who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence, reversing Google’s March position that this experience would stay ad-free. Google’s help doc says those ads are “not … based directly on your Gmail inbox or your Google Photos library.”
“Google is starting to test ads in AI Mode in Search for users who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence.”
Google, statement quoted by Search Engine Roundtable
EMARKETER’s numbers suggest AI search ads are a small slice today with fast growth expected. Our recommendation: keep AI ad tests to a small, tracked share of 2027 spend and expand only when they produce booked jobs.
6. Agents start acting for customers
Gartner predicts that by 2028, 60% of brands will use agentic AI for one-to-one interactions, and the Search Engine Land piece expects agents to complete bookings. OpenAI’s DevDay announcements, including “Sign in with ChatGPT” with 16 partners and an OpenAI Marketplace, show platforms building in that direction. We recommend making your pricing approach, availability and booking path findable in seconds, by a person or a machine.
7. Measurement stays incomplete
Google added more links to AI Mode and AI Overviews on October 15, Search Engine Roundtable reported, and said it will “introduce additional metrics over time.” Its AI performance reports still contain no click data. Plan 2027 reporting around calls, forms and booked jobs, not traffic alone. Our GA4 and call tracking setup is built for that, and our post on tracking ChatGPT traffic in GA4 covers the AI referral side.
Which 2027 dates are already on the calendar?
A few deadlines that could change how Google Search works are already set. Most are being contested, so treat them as dates to watch, not outcomes.
| When | What is scheduled | Status |
|---|---|---|
| January 2027 | EU deadline for Google to share search data | Google is appealing |
| March 2027 | UK CMA deadline for page-level controls over Google’s generative AI features; the CMA also expects click data | Reported by Search Engine Journal |
| March 18, 2027 | IETF AI Preferences draft-08 expires | The draft says it does not reflect consensus; not a standard |
| July 2027 | EU deadline for Android changes | Under appeal |
| 2027 | Local Services Ads migration reaches non-US accounts and remaining categories | Per Google Ads Help |

How should a local service business plan its 2027 budget?
Forecasts don’t pay invoices, so here is how we would turn them into line items. These are recommendations, not predictions, and the right split depends on your market and where your leads come from today.
- Fix the foundation first. Accurate business data, a complete Business Profile and service pages that answer real questions. It costs little and supports every other channel.
- Fund reviews as an ongoing line item. A review request after every job beats a one-time push.
- Keep proven channels funded. In a Gartner consumer survey reported by Demand Gen Report, about one-third of consumers said GenAI is as effective as search, 82% had noticed AI Overviews and more than two-thirds continue past the AI Overview. Regular search still gets used, so don’t cut it on a hunch.
- Set aside a small AI ad test budget. Only after call and form tracking is in place.
- Budget for measurement. Call tracking, form tracking and booked-revenue reporting are what let you judge every other line.
Watch out
Be wary of anyone selling guaranteed AI visibility for 2027. None of Gartner’s 10 top predictions for 2027 and beyond is specifically about search or marketing, and Google still shares no click data for its AI features. Treat every forecast here, including ours, as a planning input.
What to do this week
- List where your 2026 leads came from, by channel, with booked revenue.
- Check that your name, address, phone and hours match on your site, Business Profile and top directories.
- Add a direct two or three sentence answer to the top of your three most profitable service pages.
- Set up an automatic review request after every completed job.
- Put a small, separate line for AI ad tests in your 2027 budget.
Frequently asked questions
Is SEO still worth paying for in 2027?
In our view, yes, but the mix is shifting. Alphabet says Google is sending billions of clicks to websites each week through AI features, and in a Gartner consumer survey more than two-thirds of people said they continue past the AI Overview. We recommend keeping core local SEO funded while adding answer-first content, review work and better lead tracking.
What is AEO, and why does Forrester recommend more of it?
AEO, or answer engine optimization, means making your content easy for AI systems like Google AI Mode and ChatGPT to understand, trust and cite. According to Marketing-Interactive’s coverage of its 2027 planning guides, Forrester advises increasing AEO investment and leaning on PR, influencers and customer reviews, because AI answers draw on third-party sources.
Will there be ads inside Google’s AI answers in 2027?
Google is already testing them. Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google is testing ads in AI Mode for users who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence. EMARKETER forecasts US AI search ad spend growing from $2.08 billion in 2026 to $25.93 billion in 2029. We recommend small, tracked tests before committing real budget.
Do local service businesses need to prepare for AI agents?
It is worth starting. Gartner predicts that by 2028, 60% of brands will use agentic AI for one-to-one interactions, and a Search Engine Land opinion piece expects agents to complete bookings. Our recommendation is practical: make hours, service areas, pricing approach and booking options clear and consistent everywhere your business appears online.
Which 2027 deadlines could change Google Search?
Several are set but contested. The EU’s deadline for Google to share search data is January 2027 and its Android deadline is July 2027, both under appeal. Search Engine Journal reports a March 2027 UK CMA deadline for page-level AI controls. The IETF AI Preferences draft-08 expires March 18, 2027.
