Google Search: classic results, AI Overviews and AI Mode in one place

Google Search is still where most local customers start. In 2026 a single search can show a map pack, regular blue links and an AI-written answer with supporting links. Google said in July 2026 that it had brought AI Overviews and AI Mode together into one Search experience, and that AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users. Here’s how a business earns a place in each part.

Short answer

Google ranks pages with many signals that reward helpful, reliable, people-first content. AI Overviews and AI Mode draw from the same index, and Google says any page that’s indexed and can show a snippet is eligible, with no special optimization needed. For local businesses, a strong website and a complete Google Business Profile work together.

How it works

Three ways a business shows up in Google Search

All three draw on Google’s crawl of the web and its Business Profile data, but each rewards something slightly different.

Classic organic results

The familiar list of links. Google says it uses a mix of signals to find content that shows experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, known as E-E-A-T, and that “trust is most important.”

The local pack

The map with three businesses that appears for “near me” and service searches. It’s driven by Google Business Profile, ranked by relevance, distance and prominence.

AI Overviews and AI Mode

AI-written answers with supporting links. Google says these features may run several related searches, called query fan-out, to build a response and show a wider range of links than classic results.

What makes it different

How Google Search differs from the AI assistants

It has the deepest local data

ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity build their picture of your business from scattered sources. Google has your verified Business Profile, years of reviews, photos and Maps activity. That’s why local visibility in Google still starts with your profile.

The AI answer sits on top of rankings

Independent assistants run their own crawlers. Google’s AI features use Google’s regular index. Google says there are “no additional requirements” to appear in them, and no need for special AI text files or special schema. Good SEO is the entry ticket.

It publishes its quality standards

Google explains what it rewards: content made primarily to help people, with clear answers to “Who, How and Why.” Who created it, how it was made and why it exists. It holds “Your Money or Your Life” topics like health, money and safety to a higher bar.

You get first-party data

Search Console shows the searches, impressions and clicks you earn. Google says AI feature traffic is included in Search Console’s overall Web totals, though not broken out separately. Most AI assistants give site owners no reporting at all.

Checklist

What a local or service business should do

  1. Verify Search Console and fix indexing. Make sure your service and location pages are indexed and that robots.txt and your CDN allow Googlebot.
  2. Build one strong page per service. Answer the main question first, then cover cost factors, timelines, process and service area. Use clear headings so each part can stand alone.
  3. Show who’s behind the work. Add bylines, a real About page, team bios, licenses and years in business. Google encourages accurate authorship information.
  4. Keep content in text. Google’s AI guidance stresses important content in text, good page experience and internal links between related pages.
  5. Add structured data that matches the page. Use Organization or LocalBusiness markup with your real name, address, phone and hours, and keep it consistent with what visitors see.
  6. Connect your Business Profile. Link your profile to the right landing page, keep categories and hours current and reply to reviews.
  7. Measure leads, not just rankings. Track calls, forms and texts from organic search so you can see what actually brings in work.

FAQ

Google Search questions business owners ask

Is E-E-A-T a ranking factor?

Not directly. Google says E-E-A-T itself isn’t a specific ranking factor. It uses a mix of signals to identify content that shows experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust, and trust matters most.

How do I get into AI Overviews?

Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. There’s no special markup or file. Clear, helpful pages that answer specific questions give you the best chance.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews without leaving Google?

You can limit what Google shows from your pages with snippet controls like nosnippet and max-snippet. Those also affect regular results, so most businesses that want customers leave them alone.

Does AI-written content hurt rankings?

Google focuses on whether content is helpful and made for people, not how it was produced. It does encourage explaining how content was made when automation was used.
